Developing neural probes with novel structures for Electrocorticography (ECoG)

Kouki Kimizuka visited the laboratory of Prof. Wilfred van der Wiel, who leads the Brain-Inspired Nano Systems (BRAINS) team in the NanoElectronics (NE) group at the University of Twente (UT). BRAINS group has been developing novel neural interfaces, including high-density electrode arrays for brain signal recording. As part of this group, I worked on designing electrodes for Electrocorticography (ECoG) using novel structural approaches. One promising technique, syringe injection, enables flexible electronics to integrate seamlessly with brain tissue, allowing for long-term, stable monitoring and modulation of neural activity.

During my stay, I focused on designing ECoG electrodes with improved structural flexibility and biocompatibility to enhance the stability of long-term neural recordings. By optimizing the electrode geometry and material properties, we explored how these factors influence the electrode’s potential for high-fidelity neural signal acquisition. My internship project primarily centers on the design and optimization of mesh-like electrodes for ECoG, laying the groundwork for future experimental validation and neural signal processing applications.

皮質脳波計（ECoG）のための神経プローブの開発

トゥウェンテ大学のナノエレクトロニクス（NE）グループに所属する、脳啓発ナノシステム（BRAINS）チームを率いるWilfred教授の研究室を訪れました。BRAINSグループは、高密度電極アレイを含む脳信号記録用の新しい神経インターフェースの開発に取り組んでいます。特に、シリンジ注入技術を活用することで、フレキシブルエレクトロニクスを脳組織とシームレスに統合し、長期間にわたる安定した神経活動のモニタリングと制御を可能にすることが期待されています。私はこのグループの一員として、新しい構造を用いた脳波記録（ECoG）電極の設計に取り組みました。

滞在中は、ECoG電極の設計に注力し、その構造的な柔軟性と生体適合性を向上させることで、長期的に安定した神経記録を実現することを目指しました。電極の形状や材料特性を最適化することで、高精度な神経信号の取得にどのような影響を与えるかを検討しました。これにより、将来的な実験的検証や神経信号処理への応用の基盤を築くことを目的としています。
